El Palacio de Gaviria
Exhibition
Bringing together works in all media by Duchamp, Magritte and Dalí, but also Ernst, Tanguy, Man Ray, Calder, Picabia, Schwitters, Höch, Blumenfeld, Janco, and many others, the exhibition illustrates a period of brilliant and extraordinary creativity through masterpieces such as Le Chateau de Pyrenees (1959, Magritte), Surrealist Essay (1934, Dalí) and Main Ray (1935 Man Ray).
The 180 works are on loan from the Israel Museum of Jerusalem, which – largely thanks to the gift of Italian scholar-poet-gallerist Arturo Schwarz – boasts one of the world’s leading collections of Dada and Surrealism. The exhibition is curated by international scholar Dr. Adina Kamien-Kadzan, Senior Curator of Modern Art at the Israel Museum.
The exhibition is displayed within the majestic halls of Palacio de Gaviria and is organized by the Arthemisia and Art Project S.r.l. along with the Cultura e Arte Foundation, in cooperation with The Israel Museum, Jerusalem, the City Council of Madrid, and the Israeli Embassy in Spain.
The exhibition was designed by the eminent architect Oscar Tusquets Blanca, who at this occasion has reconstructed Dalí’s Mae West room and the installation 1,200 Sacks of Coal created by Duchamp for the Exposition Internationale du Surréalisme in 1938.
THE EXHIBITION
The exhibition unfolds across five thematic sections: Marvellous Juxtapositions; Desire: Muse and Abused; Automatism and its Evolution; Biomorphism and Metamorphosis; Illusion and Dreamscape.
