Duchamp Magritte Dalí
20th Century Revolutionaries

Masterpieces from the Israel Museum, Jerusalem
eedited by Adina Kamien-Kazhdan
Dada and Surrealism stand as two of the most significant movements of our
time, presenting a serious challenge to tradition and introducing materials and
visual strategies aimed at revolutionising art language. They would leave an
enduring legacy that has transformed the history of art forever. The
relationship between Surrealism and the Israel Museum started over fifty
years ago in a “chance encounter” that has since evolved into a profound and
lasting connection. Owing, in great part, to the generous contributions of
collectors and artists alike, the museum has been able to put together an
outstanding collection of Dadaist and Surrealist works including paintings,
ready-mades and photographs, together with works made using a wide
variety of original and innovative techniques. In addition, the museum’s
holdings also contain an extensive library and a vast archive of documents
which make the collection a highly valuable resource, both for the public as
well as for scholars and academics all over the world. Dedicated to artists who
revolutionised twentieth-century art, the book presents over two hundred
works from the collection of the Israel Museum in Jerusalem; masterpieces by
Duchamp, Magritte, Dalí, Ernst, Tanguy, Man Ray, Picabia, Pollock and many
other great artists which give an account of a period of extraordinary and
fascinating creativity. The volume includes a foreword by Adina Kamien-
Kazhdan, essays by Werner Spies (From Dada to Surrealism: The Power of
Image Collision to Create), Dawn Ades (From Dada Collage to the Surrealist
Object), Adina Kamien-Kazhdan (Automatism and Rorschach: Probing the
Unconscious) and a catalogue of the works (Surprising Juxtapositions;
Automatism and Subconscious; Biomorphism and Metamorphosis; Desire:
Muse and Abuse; Dreamlike Landscapes).
